ARRESTED: Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters Mpumalanga, Collen Sedibe

Mpumalanga Provincial EFF leader Collen Sedibe has been arrested for staging an illegal march to the Umbhaba Banana Estate in Komati, police spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said.
“He was released on bail together with 9 others by the Tonga Magistrates Court on Friday,” Hlathi said.

The march concerned 300 Banana farm-workers who were expelled by the company last year.

Hlathi said the march was not legal and the cops arrested the 10 leaders for public violence and “staging protest without authorisation”.
The workers at the farm were sacked last year after they wanted to be unionised. Speaking to the SABC, Sedibe said they were arrested after they refused to deliver the memorandum at the gate.

“We said we want to deliver the memorandum inside the premises of Umbhaba Banana Estate and not at the gate and the white man there wanted to collect at the gate. We refused,” Sedibe said, adding that they then had to “confront each other”.

They are back in court on 2 September.
