The national leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA) Mmusi Maimane should join the African National Congress (ANC), Mpumalanga ANC chairman David Mabuza told supporters on Sunday.

He was addressing about 2000 supporters at the ANC’s Siyanqoba mini rally at the eNkomeni sports ground in Pienaar. Mabuza said he wanted Maimane to join the ANC in order to be “fixed”.

“When we tell him the truth he doesn’t want to listen to us. He took a party of Verwoerds. A party of PW Botha. What is he going to do with it? No, he’s brainwashed maan, he must come for panelbeating,” Mabuza said to a thunderous applause.

Mabuza, who arrived alone in an ANC branded chopper, reminded supporters about “eGibhithe”, a Zulu word for Egypt and a reference to the Apartheid government, saying youths will have to take advice from the elders “who know more than you”.

“You see these ones?” Mabuza asked, pointing to the elderly supporters who were seated in a tent clad in ANC regalia.

“Bayayazi iGibhithe (they know Egypt). They got the big of the biggest. They had to carry passes and were not allowed to go to town. Do you see them? But look at them now.

“They are beautiful. Very beautiful. But you youths are lost. Ask there,” pointing to the roughly 300 elders again, “they know the way. “If you want to go the right way in life please ask the elders. Here they are. They are not far,” Mabuza said. “Ask them now. We can’t. We won’t go back to eGibhithe,” he said provoking further applause. Mabuza only spoke for nine minutes before handing out T-shirts and head-wraps.

He then took a swipe at what he called “aBomavela bashone”. “They are born in the morning and they die in the evening. “When they come back, please open doors for them. Don’t chase them away. Kids do get lost. But when they return, parents do open doors”, he said.

Mabuza then proceeded to give out blankets to the elderly before flying off to Numbi Gate Spin City in Hazyview, where he spent time with the youth. Spin City is a place where the popular mortosport of spinning cars takes place in Hazyview.

In the Biblical context, Egypt symbolises the place where Jews were enslaved by Pharoah. They were later liberated by Moses to another land.
