But now the Middelburg gogo has scooped a top award at the Lilizela tourism awards at the Sandton convention centre.
Gogo Esther Mahlangu (81)’s taking home of the 2016 Minister’s Awards dominated media headlines this week and according to her painting is in her heart and blood and this, thanking her late mom and granny, who taught her the Ndebele art paintings, has made her quite prominent worldwide.
Tourism minister Derek Hanekom saluted the Mpumalanga woman “who is truly a national treasure and an outstanding ambassador for South Africa’s rich cultural offerings”.
Hanekom said: “The Lilizela tourism awards give us the opportunity to celebrate trail-blazers such as Mam’ Esther, as well as service excellence in South African tourism industry in general.
“This is an opportunity pause and thank these individuals and businesses for their contribution to putting South Africa firmly on the global stage by ensuring their product and service offerings are of the highest standard.”
