The ANC in the Gert Sibande region is quite pleased at its 82% victory in Mayflower by-elections, a secretary has said on Thursday.
Regional secretary Audrey Maleka said his party thanked the people of Mayflower’s ward 7 for showing the country that Mpumalanga remains the home of the ANC.
“We are extremely thrilled and happy with the outcomes of the by-elections,” Maleka said.
The ANC got 82%, the IFP (8%), EFF (4.4%) and the Service Forum got 0.9%.
A by-election date was announced by the IEC after the death of ANC ward councillor candidate December Khumalo.
Khumalo died before the 3 August 2016 local government elections and the ANC went to the polls without a ward leader.
“We want to thank the people of ward 7 for showing the country that Mpumalanga, the province of the forever competent comrade DD Mabuza, is the home of the ANC,” Maleka said.
He said they also thank “all ANC structures, the leagues, alliance partners and volunteers of Oliver Tambo on the ground for the sterling job done”.

“We on the same vein congratulate our sister region Nkangala for having overwhelmingly won in ward 6 [Delmas].
“This is a demonstration and a confirmation that the ANC remains rooted in its constituencies and it continues to sustain its base and is also making inroads in every ward.
“We want to thank all those that reaffirmed their confidence in the ANC because of its commitment to change and transformation. The ANC will intensify its efforts as we soldier on towards 2019 national elections,” Maleka said.
