The South African Student Congress has expressed a critical view on a march organised by the Young Communist League of South Africa to the GS College…
The march, calling for the GS College principal Nick Balkrishen to fall, was organised by the Gert Sibande YCL under the leadership of Ayanda Mashaba but has now been criticised by Sasco in the region.
Sasco regional secretary Genius Shabalala said: “We are a vanguard of student related matters and we form part of the greater Progressive Youth Alliance.
“Tertiary institution is Sasco’s territory and space, we might agree with what the YCL has found against the institution (corruption) but the YCL secretariat should have consulted with Sasco before the march”.

Shabalala said a Sasco regional congress in eMbalenhle on 16 September 2016 resolved to tackle GS College principal Nick Balkrishen on the issues of the student accommodation being given to mine-workers at the college’s Evander campus as well as the issues of student transport and “it came as a shock that the YCL took those issues forward without us”.
“This is the reason now why we are calling for a PYA Imbizo (summit) because we believe there keeps being misunderstandings and we need to clarify certain issues and strengthen the PYA,” he said.
But YCL regional secretary Ayanda Mashaba told 013NEWS that the struggle didn’t have a “territory” as they were a vanguard of young people who were in all the institutions as students.
