The man was 30 years old in 2001 and the girl was only 15.
He was a teacher at a secondary school in Mkhondo, Mpumalanga where the girl was a Grade 9 pupil.
Mpumalanga News reported that the now 46-year-old man awaits his sentencing on 6 February 2017 for the rape case that has been in court for over 16 years.
The man, identified only by his last name Ndlovu, was found guilty by the Mkhondo Magistrates Court a week ago and will return to court next week Monday for sentencing.

Ndlovu impregnated the 15-year-old school girl at the time and promised her family he would pay the damages, but then disappeared.
In February 2002, the family reported the matter to the cops.
The man was arrested and released on bail while the matter was still in court – until last week Thursday when the magistrate found him guilty of the 2001 rape.
