A tweet by a controversial anti-ANC essayist has been refuted by Africa Check.

Africa Check has published and refuted a tweet by Afrikaner activist and essayist Dan Roodt that Afrikaans schools produced 88% of maths distinctions.

On 15 January 2017, Roodt tweeted: “88% of maths distinctions in South Africa come from Afrikaans schools (5% of schools). So ANC wants to destroy them #whitegenocide”.

But Africa Check this week said Roodt’s claims were not supported by data from the department of basic education.

It said 2016 data for matriculants shows that 132 Afrikaans language schools produced 1,307 maths distinctions, which is 16.2%.

It found only English schools produced highest maths distinction, at 66.6%.

Africa Check said if it combined those schools that used Afrikaans as a medium of instructions and those that do both, “the share only rises to 29.5%”.

See here who Dan Roodt.
