A campaign to fight racism is calling on South African youth to submit anti-racism essays.
A partnership between Khwerha Ye Afrika, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Steve Biko Foundation, department of arts and culture as well as the Foundation for Humans Rights is calling on youths under 35 to write and submit an anti-racism essay.
Entrants will be eligible to win a prize.
In a statement, the Khwerha Ye Afrika said this was an initiative “toward the elimination racism [that is] hitting an alarming proportion in South African communities”.
“The aim of SA Youth Essay Writing Content Against Racism is simply to provide young people with an opportunity to creatively use their writing talents to share experiences, encounters, and untold stories of racism, hate crime and hate speech transpiring within their schools, universities and surrounding communities,” the group said.
The winner of the SA Youth Essay Competition will receive R5,000 together with a laptop. The second and third winner will get R3,000 and R2,000 respectively, also with a laptop.
The finalist will be brought to Johannesburg and be announced at an award giving ceremony on 9 June 2017.
The closing date for submission is the end of March 2017.

Selected essays will be compiled for publication and distributed to various institutions such as schools, universities and youth centres etc. throughout the country.
“Young people from the age of 13 up to 35 years old can submit their original essays between 1000 words to 2000 words (minimum of two pages to a maximum of four)”, the group said.
