The Economic Freedom Fighters first condemned the government suspending the principal instead of dismissing him.

The EFF in the Mpumalanga province has called for a murder charge to be laid against the principal who allegedly assaulted a 14-year-old pupil, causing him to be paralysed and subsequently died.

Siphamandla Choma died on Sunday night (19 Mar) – having been in and out of hospital since the alleged incident in January this year.

Three weeks ago, education MEC Reginah Mhaule said the principal broke section 10 of the South African Schools Act and section 17 of the Employment of Educators Act and would therefore be charged with ‘misconduct’.

Reacting to the death of the child, EFF’s Collen Sedibe said they were deeply saddened and “disgusted by the gruesome killing”.

“The EFF will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the principal faces the might of the law and gets a heavy punishment for his evil deeds,” Sedibe said.

“The EFF also condemns the department of education for suspending the principal instead of dismissing him from the onset and laying assault and attempted murder charges against him.

“We condemn in all strongest possible terms the prolonging by principals and teachers to abuse and torture learners who parents leave in their hands to educate and build them to be future doctors, lawyers, nurses, engineers, accountants etc and invest in their communities and contribute in the country’s economic mainstream.

“We also call upon all parents and communities to report such brutality where ever it raises its ugly head and ensure that all the perpetrators are brought to book.,” he said.
