The initiates returned home on 25 June 2017 after spending 2 months at various initiation schools.


At least 11 initiates died during this year’s initiation.

Mpumalanga cops said 8 cases of culpable homicide and inquest concerning the deaths were under investigation.

The initiates died at different times in separate areas of the province, including KwaMhlanga and Belfast.

“The inquests are for the deaths of three female initiates and the culpable homicide cases are for the deaths of eight male initiates. I cannot say when the investigations will be concluded,” police spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi told a news agency.

Hundreds of male initiates of the Ndebele ethnic group returned home on 25 June 2017 having been in the mountains since April.

Their families welcomed them and slaughtered different animals, including bulls and goats for a feast.
