Communist leaders say the forming of a ‘popular front’ to mobilise all sectors of our society is important in fighting for the people’s power.

The South African Communist Party awaits a special national congress that will sit in 2018 where the decision to launch a new political party will be formed.

Lucky Mbuyane, the party’s provincial chairman in the Mpumalanga province, told CR17 supporters at the Nazareth hall in Middelburg on Monday mid-day that the forming of a ‘popular front’ was on the pipeline.

He said the SACP has lost confidence in the ANC-alliance and it has become irrelevant in responding to the needs of the poor.

“As the party we analysed this alliance and we viewed it as no longer relevant in terms of responding to the current material conditions. We think this alliance is outdated,” Mbuyane said.

He said the party’s 14th congress in Boksburg in July 2017 paved the way for the SACP to contest elections but then that will happen once they have consulted all alliance partners and other progressive forces with the aim of having a popular front that the outdated ruling party.

Mbuyane shared the stage with  ANC NEC member Joe Phaahla and Cosatu national deputy secretary December Mavuso at the Narazeth hall, delivering an OR Tambo lecture as part of Cosatu’s campaign for Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to succeed President Jacob Zuma.

“As we actively participate in elections we’re going to build a popular front that is going to fight for the people’s power in South Africa,” Mbuyane said.

“And as we’re building a popular front we are going to equally consult with our alliance partners, with the mass democratic movement, with all progressive forces, especially about our decision that must be finalised in our special national congress in 2018,” he said.

Member of parliament Siphosezwe Masango, Cosatu Mpumalanga leader Thabo Mokoena and YCL leader Tinyiko Ntini also attended the OR Tambo lecture organised by Cosatu and aimed at strengthening the call for Ramaphosa to be President by conscientising branch members to make a clever choice at congress.

CR17 supporters came in their numbers to hear senior leaders talk in the build-up the ANC’s 54th congress.

Mavuso said as Cosatu they took the decision to support Ramaphosa to be the President of the ANC because traditionally the deputy had always took over as President.

He shot down Mabuza’s call for unity, saying the only way to achieve unity is through supporting Ramaphosa for the Presidency.

“The only thing that can unite the ANC is only if the deputy succeeds President Zuma. We should not be confused comrades, branches also should not be confused.

“Some are saying they were wrong in Polokwane but we as Cosatu we think we were right, JZ was the deputy and we supported him to be president. We were correct in terms of ANC tradition as we are correct today, so that’s the unity we are talking about. We can’t have a kind of unity where somebody is anointing his own people. No, we cant,” he said.
