Representatives from big companies such as Anglo American and BHP are expected to form part of the summit.
Newly appointed Nkangala mayor Sarah Masilela will use this week Thursday and Friday’s mining summit to outline her concerns for the increasing unemployment in the area, she said on Tuesday.
Masilela, who was appointed the Nkangala district municipality mayor in March 2018 following the redeployment of Linah Malatjie, will address the start of the Nkangala Mining and Big Business Summit on Thursday this week.
The summit will end on Friday evening and both the regional government and big companies will take resolutions on how best to tackle unemployment in the area.
She said the summit will “identify critical skills development areas” in communities where mining takes place.
“In this summit all relevant stakeholders are invited for a round table discussion where recommendations and resolutions will be adopted and plans put in place for implementation,” Masilela said.
She said the theme will be ‘Promoting Collaborations and Partnerships for Sustainable Economic Development’.
Masilela briefed the media at the district council chamber on Tuesday.
“We want all these mining and big companies operating in Nkangala to come discuss with us in order to play a role and assist us with unemployment,” she said.
