The Color Purple: The Musical

What a superb performance!

The Color Purple is staged at The Mandela Theatre, Joburg. The cast performances were out of this world with singing and acting skills polished to the tee. It is a musical set on the epistolary novel (written as a series of letters) by Alice Walker written in 1982. She was the first woman of colour to win the Pulitzer prize in 1983.

This musical is set around the story as told by Ms Walker during times of hardship in the Americas. A movie of the same was released in 1985 and it ranked number one in terms of box office income. The movie was just as good as the book. There have been many other renditions of it over the years, each keeping to its strong storyline.

The delivery at The Mandela Theatre was beyond words. The execution of the acting and singing by the performers was astounding. The music was played by a live orchestra, which made the experience of the theatrical come more alive. It was filled with emotion, humour, feeling and pure enjoyment. For anyone who understood the times of oppression, regardless where in the world you live, this act was sure to touch home with its similarity and familiarity for situations experienced by woman the world over.

Ultimately, towards the end, it showed that to stand together is to stand for each other; especially in a world mostly dominated by the male species. Women should work as one for their evolvement and empowerment and to show men that we may not be physically equal but in ways more than one, especially being human beings, we are one and the same and what we do to and for each other always acts as a ripple effect towards one another.

The Color Purple is a must see show for everyone, young and old. It contains some sensitive scenes so do bear that in mind, but that is nothing to throw you off from going to see the show. The Musical is still running at the theatre until 2 September 2018.
