ANC NEC member Bongani Bongo has spoken out about his hospitalisation, telling City Press that he had now been discharged from hospital after spending several weeks in ICU.

Bongo, who was “vomiting blood” and getting quite weak, was admitted to the Waterfall Netcare hospital in Midrand, north of Johannesburg on 9 August 2019.

Since then the ex-spy minister had been kept in “high-care” at the Gauteng private hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU). He said he doesn’t talk about the condition that landed him in hospital as he still wants to do his own investigation.

Bongo said certain people nationally had been spreading rumours about him being dead while being treated for a very serious case of suspected food poisoning.

He said he is not yet going to “talk about my illness and there’s nothing I can clarify at this point”.

“I need to study the doctors’ notes and do some investigation,” said the Parliamentarian and Mpumalanga lawyer.

He said he was now back at work and recovering.

Former Cosatu President Sdumo Dlamini is also at a Durban hospital, allegedly also for food poisoning.
