Joseph Mabuza’s family demands justice

HOMICIDE OR MURDER?: The death of former Mpumalanga safety and security spokesman Joseph Mabuza remains an open wound for his family who are now questioning whether his death was indeed an accident or something more than what meets the eye. PICTURE BY Facebook

Police said extraditing a suspect is a long process and are busy with the paper work to get the suspect to come to South Africa and answer for the government spokesman’s mysterious death.

The family of the late Mpumalanga government spokesperson Joseph Mabuza said the way things unfold in the matter now makes it appear like their brother’s death was actually a planned murder.

The Mabuza family speaks more 365 days since the man lost his life on the highway to Mozambique.

Police sources last week leaked the photo of the suspect in the murder of Mabuza, identified in the docket as Kwanele Shabangu and originally from eSwatini. He is believed to be in Mozambique but police boss Lieutenant-General Mondli Zuma said it could be either Mozambique or eSwatini.

Zuma said the suspect “absconded” and were busy with extradition processes.

Mabuza, related to deputy president DD Mabuza, used to work in former safety and security MEC Pat Ngomane’s office as his communication officer.

Family spokesman Kingdom Mabuza said they are not happy with the delays in having the suspect coming to answer in court and believed something was wrong.

Joseph Mabuza died on the spot on the Sunday afternoon of 23 December 2018 when a white bakkie mysteriously made a U-turn, crashing with his motorbike. It happened just before the Nkomazi toll gate, towards Mozambique

Kingdom said at first they thought Joseph’s death was the result of a culpable homicide, where the suspect will simply hand himself over and answer for it.

“But now that the driver of the bakkie is running away it makes it seem like our brother’s death was a planned murder,” Kingdom said when speaking to the reporter.

He said as a family they had not been getting any update from the cops on the matter.

Kingdom said: “At first as a family we looked at it as culpable homicide but now we start thinking that it was pure murder. This thing appears to be much bigger. Why is the suspect running away?”.
