The country honours nurses during the month of May, this year though while the fight against the Corona Virus continues.

Health MEC Sasekani Manzini has said that as government they are aware that nurses also are scared of being infected with Covid-19 and their safety was much more important moving forward.

This week Manzini joined nurses across the country to celebrate International Nurses Day – the anniversary of the day of 12 May 1820 when Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern day professional nursing, was born.

Manzini told nurses in eMalahleni this week Tuesday that they are committed to their safety.

She said as an MEC she knows very well that the nurses were the people who were really terrified by the outbreak.

“As a department we want to commit that your safety is of utmost importance to us,” she said at the Witbank General Hospital.

“I always tell people that as far as they are scared of the virus, they are sitting in the comfort of their homes, how about you nurses who wake up every day to come to the facilities? For that we want to say thank you and as a department we understand,” she said.

“So we are saying we will support you and as a department we ask each and every one of you to come forward with whatever problem you may have, we say don’t die alone while we are there,” she said.

She added they would not accept a situation where nurses would be expected to service people while nobody was willing to service them back.

“So we are there, through your unions, you can always interact with us, you can always talk to us so that we are able to provide the necessary support that you would need and not only about work but about anything that troubles you because there is no way you can provide quality service if you are not in a good state of mind ,” said Manzini to the nurses.
