Majuba said a culture of destroying public properties was inherited from past battles against the Apartheid government.

The FF+ has come out guns blazing at Mpumalanga education MEC Bonakele Majuba for saying Apartheid was to blame for the vandalism and torching of Mpumalanga schools, The Citizen has reported.

Majuba said the behaviour of destroying public properties was inherited from past struggles against Apartheid and has become part of our culture as a black society.

“Our people had to fight for everything that they have due to Apartheid, that is now part of our culture,” he said during his department’s budget vote debate in the legislature.

73 schools had reportedly been torched and vandalised in Mpumalanga during March and April 2020.

Responding to FF+’s Werner Weber on whether a lack of discipline in schools possibly gave rise to violent actions, like burning down schools, Majuba said: “Apartheid has taught our people that when they want something, they must resort to violent behaviour and that is why the schools are being torched.

“Our people had to fight for everything that they have and due to apartheid, that is now part of our culture.”

But the FF+ said it was outrageous that MEC still blamed Apartheid 26 years after the system was defeated.

“The time has come for the ANC in Mpumalanga to stop using apartheid as an excuse and to start taking responsibility for its own actions,” said the FF+ in a statement.
