The state says they won’t have mercy for him because the only reason he admitted to doing the crime was after DNA results linked him to the crime.
Rape-convict Regiment Maluleke has been sentenced to life imprisonment after the 29-year-old admitted he is the person who raped an 82-year-old Gogo from Thulamahashe village.
The Gogo was raped in January 2017 but all along there was no suspect to arrest until recently when cops got hold of his blood and linked him to the crime.
He pleaded guilty Tuesday this week 21 July 2020 at the Mhlala Magistrates Court…
Magistrate Elmarie Theron found no reasons to reduce Maluleke’s sentence, despite pleading guilty to not waste the state’s time.
Maluleke told the court that he found the Gogo in her house in Newton Trust and told her he was looking for his girlfriend.
He said he found the Gogo alone and began forcing her into having sex with him.
Prosecutor Matume Maake told the court that Maluleke pleaded guilty “not because he is remorseful but because of the DNA evidence that is linking him to the offence”.
He added that Maluleke committed a serious offence – an offence that is prevalent in the country and which deserved harsher sentences.
NPA spokeswoman Monica Nyuswa said the Gogo’s statement showed that she suffered emotional stress and physical injuries as a result of Maluleke’s actions.
“The Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Matric Luphondo welcomed the conviction and sentence in light of the current spate of gender-based violence cases in the country,” added Nyuswa.
