He was a loan shark as well as a principal at Zwelisha Primary School.

The 50-year-old wife of slain KaNyamazane businessman Vusi Mona was this week slapped with a life sentence and an additional 28 years in prison for his murder that occurred more than 3 years ago.

Motha’s lifeless body was found in his Ford Ranger bakkie abandoned in Pienaar on the Valentine’s Day of 2017. It was riddled with bullets.

He was murdered the previous day – after 3 gunmen stormed his home midday 13 February and kidnapped him while he was irrigating his garden.

At the time of his murder, Mona was 48-year-old.

NPA spokeswoman Monica Nyuswa said both Mona and Simangele were at their house in KaNyamazane when 3 men entered the premises.

“They took Mona and forced him into his vehicle,” Nyuswa said, adding his body was found with his legs tied with shoes laces.

“After the gruesome discovery, investigations ensued and the wife was arrested in April 2017,” she said.

The court found that Simangele plotted the death of her husband.

The court saw a video footage showing the men entering the premises and the police investigator said Simangele was someone who was struck with a guilt conscience as the investigation began.

“An eye witness also told the court that she saw people together with Simangele taking money from Mona’s bag on the day of the incident,” said Nyuswa Tuesday 4 August 2020.

“The three men were never found nor identified,” she said.

Prosecutor Ntsika Mpolweni said such a heavy sentence was needed as our society needs protection from people like Simangele in order to have trust in the criminal justice system.

Mpolweni said Mona was ambushed and on top of that betrayed by his own wife – and was unarmed, unprepared and defenceless when the armed men entered the premises.

Judge Brian Mashile sentenced Simangele to life for murder, 2 years for kidnapping, 5 years for house-breaking, 15 years for robbery and 6 years for possessing of an illegal gun and ammunition.

NPA head Matric Luphondo said the sentencing “demonstrates that the prosecution authority remains operational”.

“And we have doubled our efforts to ensure that violent cases are prioritised and resolved to create a safer community and for all the citizens of Mpumalanga,” said Luphondo.
