This is not the first time theatres at public hospitals in the province have had to cancel operations due to dysfunctional equipment.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) said they have received numerous calls with regards to patients not receiving urgent medical attention due to the air conditioner in the theatre not working.
Reports indicate that the Department of Health in Mpumalanga is not in a position to pay for the repairs.
The air conditioner is expected to cost the department approximately R1.5 million to fix.
In a statement, released on Monday 24 January 2022 the DA Spokesperson on Health in Mpumalanga, Jane Sithole said health MEC, Sasekani Manzini needs to ensure that there is a plan in place to transfer the patients waiting for surgery to another hospital where these surgeries can take place.
“All operations that take place in that theatre have now been postponed indefinitely,” Sithole added.
The party has since written to the MEC demanding an urgent intervention at Rob Ferreira Hospital.
The minority party has given the MEC seven working days to respond with a plan or they will approach the Human Rights Commission to intervene and investigate the hospital and the Mpumalanga health department for violation of patients’ rights to proper and adequate medical care.
