PAYDAY MILLIONAIRES: While close to 70% of youth are sitting idle without any prospect of employment and while more than 15 million South Africans go to bed on an empty stomach, its a bumper year for politicians as their new salary increases will see the most junior member of parliament earning over R1m per annum. David Mabuza as deputy president will earn R2.9-million a year, minister Ronald Lamola R2.4-million and deputy ministers Fish Mahlalela, Candith Mashego Dlamini, Thabang Makwetla and Reginah Mhaule R2.037-million.

Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane will earn R2.3-million as head of the province while EFF leader Collen Sedibe and DA leader Jane Sithole will get R1.3-million in the Mpumalanga legislature, according to this year’s gazetted proposed salaries by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers .

MECs will earn R2.037-million, which is the same proposed salary for legislature speaker Makhosazane Masilela as well as Parliament’s deputy speaker Lechesa Tsenoli and of the NCOP chairperson Sylvia Lucas.

Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula will earn the same R2.9-million proposed for deputy president David Mabuza together with Amos Masondo as chairperson of the national council of provinces.

John Steenhuisen, as the official opposition would take home R1.64 million, while EFF leader Julius Malema and other leaders of minority parties will score R1.38 million.

Upon making the recommendations for the salary increases of politicians, the commission first consults with the minister of finance, the minister of justice, the chief justice, the lower courts remuneration committee, and the department of cooperative governance and traditional affairs.

The salary increase recommendations will wait for President Cyril Ramaphosa to approve them.

Ramaphosa’s own salary increase is approved by Parliament.
