Thaba Chweu mayor Friddah Nkadimeng has survived a motion of no confidence brought by opposition parties in council Thursday 23 June 2022.

The African United Movement tabled the motion during the council sitting earlier and the DA and EFF supported it.

The parties are accusing Nkandimeng of misleading council on the contract in the appointment of the municipal manager Sphiwe Matsi.

They were defeated by ANC councillors – 18 votes against 8 votes.

Opposition parties claim that Nkadimeng received a letter from co-operative governance MEC stating that the appointment of the manager was irregular and should be amended.

“It is disappointing that we did not get enough votes to remove the mayor,” the DA’s Comfort Sibiya said of the motion tabled against Nkadimeng.

“We felt that the mayor was also responsible in appointing the municipal manager irregularly,” he said, adding that Matsi doesn’t have a contract with the municipality yet performs job and gets paid.

“So it is very disappointing that the ANC decided to vote against the motion,” Sibiya said.

But Nkadimeng says Matsi’s contract of employment is still within the 5-year period, which allows the council to make amendments as advised by the provincial government.

“We are not opposing that. That’s why in council we had the item… but the contract is still within the period because it says in the legislation that the term of office of the municipal manager is for five years and an extra one year has been added for that contract so that we deal with the issue of advertisement and interviews and so forth,” says Nkadimeng.
