Meanwhile, authorities have reported a small number of incidents during special voting, which began Monday 2 November.

Security forces in Mpumalanga say they are ready to deal with any attempts to disrupt Wednesday’s local government elections, after identifying 11 voting stations as high-risk areas.

Six of the 11 are in Gert Sibande, 3 in Ehlanzeni and 2 in Nkangala.

The Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (ProvJoints) said it was ready to handle this elections and ensure everyone was safe.

ProvJoints chairperson Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise said the province had identified 1,846 voting stations, with only 11 as high-risk and the remaining 1,835 considered low-risk.

She said they will act “against any unlawful conduct aimed at disrupting the electoral process or preventing voters from exercising their democratic rights.”

“Additional attention and contingency measures have been directed towards voting stations identified as having a higher risk,” she said.

The operation involves the South African Police Service (SAPS), South African National Defence Force (SANDF), Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), State Security Agency and other stakeholders.
