President Jacob Zuma has ordered that the South African flag flies at half-mast in all stations from today in honour of ANC stalwart Ahmed Kathrada.
The anti-Apartheid activist died on Tuesday morning (28 Mar) at the age of 87 following a brain surgery.
Presidency spokesman Dr Bongani Ngqulunga said Zuma has also declared a special official funeral for Kathrada.
“President Zuma sends his deepest condolences to his partner, former minister of public enterprises Ms Barbara Hogan, the Kathrada family and his political home, the African National Congress, which Uncle Kathy served selflessly throughout his adult life,” Ngqulunga said.
“Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will lead the send-off of the much-loved stalwart within government,” he said.
Kathrada was sentenced to life imprisonment during the Rivonia Trial of the early 1960s along side the late Nelson Mandela and was released in 1989.
