The whole township is on fire.
The police in Standerton have shot dead a 14-year-old boy.
People in the townships of Standerton are striking for service delivery and demanding the arrest of Lekwa municipal manager Linda Tshabalala whom they accuse of fraud and corruption.
Protesters say police tried to contain a large group of people coming towards them by opening live ammunition, killing the child.
The child was shot at eSimendeni section in Sakhile and was declared dead at the Standerton hospital on Friday afternoon.
Police spokesman Captain Johannes Nhlabathi confirmed a 14-year-old died on Friday mid-day.
“Yes we can confirm. It happened in Sakhile. We will update you on what really happened,” Nhlabathi said.
A case of fraud and corruption was opened by the South African National Civic Organisation against Tshabalala following the disappearance of R21 million from municipal coffers.
Cops say protesters have also smashed the windows of his home in Sakhile.
The ANC in the region has summoned both Tshabalala and Standerton mayor Linda Dlamini to come to regional headquarters in Ermelo “to account for the situation in Lekwa,” spokesman Sabelo Sikhakhane said
