He was 70 years old and died after complaining of pains in hospital.

The South African National Civic Organisation in the Mpumalanga province has sent its heartfelt condolences to the family of its provincial secretary Mike Soko following the death of his father over the weekend.

Piet Phakathi died at the Embhuleni hospital in Nhlazatshe at the age of 70.

Phakathi passed just two days after the civic organisation held its provincial elective congress, re-electing his son as the secretary of the organisation in the Mpumalanga province once more for another term.

Deputy provincial secretary Linda Dhlamini said on Sunday the organisation woke up to the sad news.

“Mr Phakathi was an active member of SANCO in good standing and his participation and guidance shall be dearly missed,” he said in a statement late on Sunday (4 Jun).

“SANCO in Mpumalanga owes to the memory of Mr Phakathi for his sterling work of raising and mentoring a great leader in the person of our provincial secretary,” Dhlamini said.

Funeral arrangements will be communicated, he added.
