The university of the Witwatersrand has scored top honours for graduate employability in the country.

This according to a new ranking by the Times Higher Education Group.

The ranking, compiled by French HR consultancy, Emerging, and published by the Times High Education Group reveals which universities the recruiters at top companies think are the best at preparing students for the workplace.

The 150 universities span 33 different countries, from the US to Japan.

Employers voted both for institutions in their own country and universities around the world if they recruit internationally, the group said.

Views of respondents from 22 countries were polled, with a survey that focuses on the practical skills of ‘ready-for-work’ graduates developed by universities.

The respondents were asked which of their local universities produce the best graduates.

Ranked at 150, Wits is the only university in South Africa and in Africa to make it to the top 150, the cut-off line by the rankings.

A graduate employability ranking compiled by QS Top Universities for 2018 also ranks Wits as producing some of the most employable graduates, second to the University of Cape Town.

The QS ranking differs from the Times High Education ranking in that it looks at a broader set of indicators, which are already taken into account when the group does its top university ranking, and lists the top 500 universities for employability in the world.

Six South African universities made the 2018 ranking.

University of Cape Town

University of the Witwatersrand

University of Pretoria

Stellenbosch University

University of Johannesburg

University of KwaZulu Natal
