PRET deputy president Nicholas Selepe is set to come back to the ANC.

Apparently, Selepe has already joined the ANC but an official defection event will be held today at the Stanwest hall in Sakhile, Standerton.

Selepe had led a group of disgruntled ANC members towards the 2016 local government elections to form a splinter party – the Civic Voice – and contested elections.

It won three seats of the 30 council seats – becoming the third largest party in the Lekwa local municipal council in Standerton – with the ANC winning twenty, the DA five and the EFF two.

Gert Sibande ANC spokesman Sabelo Sikhakhane said a regional executive committee meeting of the ANC met on 8 January 2018 and welcomed the Civic Voice members “back home”.

“And we request branches of the ANC to do the same,” he said.

“We are proud to announce that comrades from Lekwa who had defected to Civic Voice are now back to the ANC,” said Sikhakhane.

He said the official welcoming will be announced, where “all of them” will come back home.

This may imply the Civic Voice movement is now dead – as Selepe was the founder and leader.

It is not yet clear what will become of the party’s caucus in the council.

Selepe this week didn’t return an sms and missed calls.

In March 2017, he was part of a large number of people who came to the Witbank Dam for the launch of the Practical Radical Economic Transformation (PRET), attended by then ANC provincial leader DD Mabuza and various others in his circles, like Speedy Mashilo, Eric Kholwane and Lindiwe Ntshalintshali.

He was elected to deputise Themba Sgudla, the wealthy tenderprenuer from the eMalahleni area, who became the President.
