Mpumalanga social development MEC Busi Shiba is preparing a gala dinner to raise funds to host various sporting activities for the elderly.

Called the Provincial Golden Games, the event will take place between 16 and 18 September 2018 in Badplaas.

The department said it will be an event of people aged 60 years and above and old people will compete “in various sporting codes”.

“The Golden Games promote active ageing and socialisation amongst older persons,” departmental spokeswoman Petunia Lessing said.

“The games are held in line with the International Madrid Plan of Action on Ageing which encourages new approaches to ageing policies and programmes,” she said.

The gala dinner will begin at 6 in the evening of Sunday 16 September at the Aventura resorts and Shiba will address it.

Lessing said this will be a competition, basically and the winners of the provincial competitions will then take part in the national competition where all nine provinces compete “for the top honours”.

“The old citizens will represent the three districts of Mpumalanga,” she said, adding sporting activities in the Golden Games competition in Aventura will include athletics, duck walking, juskei and dress up.

It will start on the Monday morning of 17 September and end on Tuesday.

“The games promise to be a cracker judging from the level of fitness of the grannies and grand-dads.

“The Golden Games are a platform to enhance the quality of life and improve the health of older persons and to embrace active ageing,” Lessing said.
