Sappi in Mpumalanga lends a hand for Covid-19

The South African company is contributing to the heightened fight to save people’s lives.


Pulp and paper producer Sappi has donated items to the Mpumalanga government that will be used to fight the spread of Covid-19.

The items include sanitisers, cloth masks and food parcels.

The items were received on Friday morning 17 April 2020 by finance MEC Pat Ngomane and will now be distributed across the province.

Ngomane said as government they were thankful and wished more companies could come forward and lend a helping hand too as the world tries to fight the Coronavirus Disease 2019.

He said the 1000 litres of hand sanitiser donated by Sappi Southern Africa will be distributed to 28 clinics across the province.

The other items include blankets, 4000 cloth masks, food parcels and a special nutrient porridge. 

Ngomane said he had sent out requests to various companies and was thankful that Sappi “heeded our call”.

“The donation we received from Sappi is an indication that they are indeed with us, and that they support all our efforts to save the lives of our people,” said Ngomane.

He said he was now calling on other companies to also come with any form of help, “to also join this good and noble cause by donating whatever they deem essential”.

“They can donate food parcels or even money, so that our department of social development, can distribute them to those mostly affected by the lockdown. We need them now more than ever before,” said Ngomane.
