The investigation will cover the period from 2016 to today.
Co-operative governance MEC Busi Shiba has dispatched a team of investigators to probe graft allegations at the eMalahleni local municipality.
In a letter she sent to speaker Busi Hlumbane, Shiba said that her department is investigating cases of nepotism, tender corruption, and how senior management salaries were increased.
Shiba said she is probing fraud, corruption and maladministration “or any other serious malpractice”.
This includes the payment of travelling allowances to senior managers.
Recently it was reported that senior managers breached rules to pay themselves huge salaries.
The period of investigation covers ANC secretary Lindiwe Ntshalintshali’s time as mayor of the municipality to when Linah Malatjie took over.
If wrongdoing is found, the team will then make recommendations for actions to be taken against those found in the wrong.
Tuesday this week, Hlumbane convened a special council sitting where the team was introduced.
