The Premier together with safety and security MEC Vusi Shongwe and police boss Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela visited the Elukwatini area near Badplaas.
The police have revealed that insofar as they are seeing a decrease in crime however rape and murder continue to give them a serious problem.
“Rape and murder, they are giving us a very serious challenge,” police boss Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela said at the Elukwatini stadium where they had a Crime Prevention Imbizo.
“Hence you see today we are calling the community to come and assist us,” she said to the scores of community members.
“These are the crimes that are taking place inside the houses, these are crimes that take place after they come from the taverns, we are dealing with that together jointly, we are working with safety and security,” said Manamela.
The Imbizo held on Saturday 12 March 2022 was addressed by Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane, safety MEC Vusi Shongwe as well as Manamela – and they all promised they will fight and win the battle against crime in the notoriously dangerous area.
Few months ago station commander Colonel Beauty Marivate was shot dead while she was responding to a business robbery. She came to the scene with her husband who was also shot but survived.
Another woman was recently hit by a stray bullet while armed men were engaged in a business robbery.
Mtshweni-Tsipane said the increasing crime taking place in the Chief Albert Luthuli municipality should end.
“The crime that has engulfed this municipality has increased a lot,” said the Premier.
“Now we are here as government to say that enough is enough,” she said.
