The Nkangala ANCYL says accusations that they deliberately snubbed BGMs in the JS Moroka sub-region are an “attention-seeking stunt”.
They were arrested this week during an ambush by cops.
The sixteen men arrested on Monday afternoon for possession of gold will return to court next week, when the court will hear their bail application.
They will return to court on 14 May 2018.
“They were remanded in custody by the Barberton Magistrates Court,” police spokeswoman Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said.
“It’s unlawful possession of unwrought gold bearing materials,” she said.
“The syndicate comprising of sixteen members was arrested during a joint operation between members of the Mpumalanga Hawks’ serious organised crime unit, Barberton crime prevention and the mine security at Consort Mine.
“They were found in possession of gold bearing ore valued at approximately R50 000.00,” Sekgotodi said.
