While national figures on rhino poaching went down in 2018 it increased in Mpumalanga, according to the deaprtment of environmental affairs.
An extra charge of murder has been added to her previous charges of malicious damage to property, assault and resisting arrest.
A prisoner awaiting trial at a KwaMhlanga police station is seeking the assistance of state lawyers.
She made a brief appearance at the KwaMhlanga Magistrates Court on Monday morning, charged with Lieutenant-Colonel Sibongile Vilakazi’s murder.
Police spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said the KwaMhlanga Magistrates Court postponed the matter to 11 September 2017 for Msiza to be provided with a legal aid lawyer.
“She said she would be using a Legal Aid lawyer and the case was postponed,” Hlathi said.
He said Msiza’s bail application will also be heard on the 11 September.
Vilakazi died in a kitchen of the KwaMhlanga police station on Saturday after being allegedly bashed by Msiza.
Vilakazi, who was a senior cop with the station, had come to the holding cells to supply Msiza with clothes and medicines when Msiza grabbed her and hitting her against the hard floor and wall.
Cops said the lieutenant-colonel managed to reach to the kitchen after the incident but collapsed and died on the spot.
She suffered head and neck injuries.
Msiza is suspected by cops to be mentally unhealthy.
“Msiza has a string of other charges including assault of a police officer, two counts of malicious damage to property, resisting arrest that she is currently facing and for which she will appear at the same court on Thursday (07 Sep),” Hlathi said.
“She said she would be using a Legal Aid lawyer,” said Hlathi.
