They came to the area pretending to be Sars officials before disappearing with large sums of money.
The police in the Standerton area have charged four of their colleagues with business robbery.
The four police constables -Thabiso Lepoto (35), Jabu Sekhoto (37), Siphiwe Ntshangase (45) and Fika Makhubu (33) – made a brief appearance at the Standerton Magistrates Court on Wednesday this week accused of robbing a supermarket in the area belonging to a foreign national.
Police spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said the four allegedlypretended to be inspectors from the South African Revenue Services.
When they were there, they allegedly robbed the owner of an undisclosed amount of money.
The court granted each of them R1 000 bail and ordered them to return to court on 5 May 2018.
“The internal investigation against the members is also underway,” Hlathi said, addingMpumalanga police boss Lieutenant-General Mondli Zuma issued a stern warning for cops and other employees of the police service to “refrain from illicit activities” following the Standerton incident.
“The provincial commissioner said police and all other employees of the SAPS should behave themselves within the constraints of the law at all time,” Hlathi said.
