A by-elections declared by the IEC after the death of a ward councillor candidate will have senior leaders of the ANC, including State Security Minister David Mahlobo and ANCYL deputy president Desmond Moela , doing door-to-door campaigns in the area.

A decision to invite Mahlobo and Moela to assist in Mayflower, Mpumalanga, was taken by a regional executive committee meeting of the ANCYL in the Gert Sibande region on 26 October 2016.

League regional spokesman Thulasizwe Thomo said the door-to-door campaign in Mayflower’s ward 7 on the Friday of 28 October 2016 will be led by Mahlobo, Moela and regional chairman Trevor Nkosi.

“The REC had unanimously agreed to take a collective responsibility in ensuring that it goes all out in campaigning for the ANC in the ward 7 of Chief Albert Luthuli sub-district and had took a bold program of action to address the weaknesses and shortcomings that has led to the decline of our electoral support on 3 August 2016 in that ward,” he said.

Ward councillor candidate December Khumalo died just before the 3 August 2016’s local government elections and the ANC went to the ballot without a ward leader but won 92% of the votes.

Provincial DA youth leader Muso Kubheka told 013NEWS on Wednesday that his party will not contest the by-elections in ward 7, citing the reasons that by-elections are “expensive” and because they didn’t get much votes on 3 August 2016 local government elections.

They will now leave the EFF, IFP and NFP to contest the ward.
