A ward candidate who won a ward in Mpumalanga’s area of Delmas township has been asked to resign, after her party realised she was the wrong one.
ANC Nkangala regional spokesman Sello Matshokga explained that a decision to ask Maria Spengane to resign came after the community members rebelled against the selection process that led to her nomination.
“During the time when we were preparing for the 3 August local government elections the community members selected Mishack Mthombeni but by mistake we registered comrade Maria. So after the local elections, we requested that she resigns, which she did. That’s why there’s by-elections now,” Matshokga said on Thursday afternoon.
She resigned few weeks ago and the sub-regional body of the Independent Electoral Commission in the Victor Khanye municipality announced 9 November 2016 as the date of the by-elections

Matshokga says a community meeting on Sunday this coming weekend “will put the community in charge of their own leader”.
“There will first be a Branch General Meeting in Ward 6 on 8 October and then on 9 October, the Sunday, we will have a community meeting where the community members will choose their own candidate. We have decided to start everything afresh,” Matshokga told 013NEWS.
