Fires spread during warm, dry and windy weather conditions.
Officials are asking all residents in the Mpumalanga province to take extra cautions during this time of winds.
People in the highveld areas especially in areas like Ermelo, Standerton, Secunda, Volkrust, Middleburg, Balfour and eMalahleni are warned of runaway fires.
“Communities are warned to be cautious of the spread and development of runaway fires especially in the Highveld areas. People are advised to take extra precautions and prevent making fires in the open.

“The threats are due to moderately high temperatures with wind on the Highveld,” George Mthethwa of the provincial department of co-operative governance and traditional affairs said.
The winds will be stronger on 16 August in these areas.
This morning the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a warning of an approaching cold front that would bring snowfall and rain in some parts of the country.
“Significant snowfall can also be expected over the southern and central Drakensberg. Snowfall could be heavy over the northeastern parts of the Eastern Cape, possibly leading to the closure of the majority of mountain passes in the region as well as associated disruption of traffic flow,” said the SA Weather Service in a statement.
