Ramaphosa declares official state funeral for Sam Nzima

The Mpumalanga premier wrote to the president on Monday asking him to grant the veteran lensman an official state funeral.


President Cyril Ramaphosa has approved the Mpumalanga government’s request to grant Soweto Uprising photographer Sam Nzima an official state funeral.

Veteran photographer Sam Nzima will be given an official special official provincial funeral category 2, the office of the premier said on Wednesday afternoon.

“The President has instructed that the national flag fly at half mast in the Mpumalanga province on the day of the funeral as a sign of respect” spokesman Zibonele Mncwango said.

Mpumalanga Premier Refilwe Mtsweni visited the Nzima family in Bushbuckridge on Monday morning to convey her condolences of behalf of the Mpumalanga government.

Famous for shooting the photo of Mbuyisa Makhubo carrying a dying 12-year-old Hector Pieterson shot by Apartheid cops during the 1976 Soweto student uprising‚ the photojournalist died at the Rob Ferreira hospital in Mbombela on the evening of 12 May 2018.

“The premier will meet with the Nzima family to finalise the date of the funeral, more details will be communicated after the meeting,” Mncwango said.
