Three hitmen were hired to gun down the serviceman.
The Tshwane high court sitting in Barberton has heard how a crime intelligence officer was murdered after being accused of exposing a dagga dealer in the area.
37-year-old Constable Sifiso Mabuza died in March 2013 after being killed by three hitmen in Langeloop near Tonga.
He was working in Komatipoort police station and served to gather crime-related information.
Three hitmen – Wiseman Ngomane, Victor Sibiya and Sindi Mvubu were hired by drug dealer 35-year-old Theresa Mabaso to kill the serviceman.
She had accused the serviceman of exposing her to the cops of dealing in dagga.
She then hired the three men, paying a deposit of R10 000, which was part of a R46 000 deal, to kill him.
The constable was killed at his house in March 2016.
Police then arrested one of the hitmen, Mvubu, who in 2016 pleaded guilty to being part of the group that murdered Mabuza and was sentenced to 20 years for murder and 18 years for housebreaking.
Another hitman, Sibiya, died before the case was finalised.
On the Friday of 21 September 2018, Mabaso and the other hitman Ngomane, standing accused in the court box, got sentenced to life imprisonment.
They had pleaded innocent to the charge. Ngomane received a further nine year sentence for housebreaking with the intent to commit murder as well as possession of a firearm and ammunition without a licence.
Police spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said between last year and this year, several police officers have been killed in the province, among them two commissioned officers from the KwaMhlanga cluster.
“One was shot and killed while responding to an armed robbery at a filling station while the other died in police holding cells while handling an awaiting trialist,” Hlathi said.
“Four others were killed by their partners in domestic related incidences,” he said, adding police boss Lieutenant General Mondli Zuma welcomed the sentencing.
“Zuma stated that it should send a clear message to criminals that anyone killing a police officer has declared war to the whole country,” Hlathi said.
