He says this time they want Tsipane but next time they will opt for Nyoni as one of their own.
Ehlanzeni ANC strongman Ngrai Ngwenya has said he will support consummate ANC leader Peter Nyoni for the position of provincial chairman when the party convenes another elective congress – four years from now.
Lomdzala said Nyoni who also comes from the eHlanzeni region is an obvious candidate for the 14th provincial leadership.
The ANC plans to convene a 13th elective congress on 27 March 2020 to elect deputy president DD Mabuza’s successor in Mpumalanga. The frontrunners in the contest for the position of provincial chairperson are Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane and acting chairman Mandla Ndlovu.
Ngwenya supports Tsipane and says Ndlovu is not a capable candidate as he divides the Mpumalanga ANC, charging that the humble Ndlovu has ruined what Mabuza had built “so hard” and that is “Unity”.
“I once phoned Mandla and I said to him, ‘Comrade Mandla, why are you dividing Mpumalanga?’ Do you know how hard [it was] for Comrade DD to build the unity we used to have’?” Ngwenya once said while addressing scores of ANC members who had gathered at the Grasslands conference hall in Ermelo 19 January 2020.
“Let’s make sure that we remove Mandla and Lindiwe [Ntshalintshali] from that office,” he said.
Ngwenya last year October bumped into Nyoni in a Mbombela CBD restaurant and told him they would support him as provincial treasurer – on Tsipane’s slate, during the party’s upcoming13th congress.
But now it seems like Lomdzala has changed his mind…
Their camp could support Ermelo strongman Sibusiso ‘The Great’ Sgudla as provincial treasurer – but lobbyists say discussions are still underway.
Sgudla’s cousin who is current provincial treasurer Vusi Shongwe is supported for the position of deputy chairperson on Tsipane’s slate while PEC member Pat Ngomane becomes secretary and spokesperson Sasekani Manzini becomes Ngomane’s secretary.
The camp will face off with the NdlovuChirwa camp that wants acting chairman Mandla Ndlovu as provincial chair and Gert Sibande leader Muzi Chirwa as secretary while Nkangala leader Speedy Mashilo becomes deputy chair and acting secretary Lindiwe Ntshalintshali retains her post of deputy secretary.
Co-operative governance MEC Mandla Msibi is supported by the anti-Tsipane camp to rise to the helm as treasurer.
But Ngwenya himself is needed for a much bigger task in eHlanzeni – Mpumalanga’s largest region by membership, to become deputy regional chair where Gillion Mashego will be the chair, Phazamisa Mathe or Nathaniel Mashile becomes the secretary.
They will be faced off with NdlovuChirwa’s favoured candidate Jackey Macie who the camp wants as chair, Follas Sibuyi as secretary, Makhosazana Masilela as deputy chair, William Nkala as deputy secretary and Morris Mazibane as treasurer.
