The road projects are still being designed and are set to create a number of jobs.

In a statement issued on Monday 8 February 2022, the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) said it has set aside R9 billion for road projects in the province of Mpumalanga.

The upgrade of the N2 between Ermelo and the KZN border will cost the agency R6-billion while an upgrade of the R40 between Hazyview and Bushbuckridge will cost R3-billion, maintenance manager Madoda Mthembu said in the statement.

The N2 is important as heavy vehicles use it to ferry goods to Richards Bay and to the Southern African countries.

The R40 connects Mbombela and Limpopo and it’s also being used by tourists travelling to the Kruger National Park.

“The R40 upgrade will help ease traffic congestion and travel times between Acornhoek, Bushbuckridge and Hazyview,” Mthembu said.

A special maintenance project is underway along the N17, running between Chrissiesmeer and the Msukaligwa and Chief Albert Luthuli local municipalities. These projects are expected to be completed in March 2023.

There is also another upgrade project along the R573, between Kwaggafontein and Vlaklaagte, specifically within the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality. It is expected to be completed by 28 February 2024.
