The provincial cop boss has confirmed that he received a request from the minister to investigate allegations made by a well-known rhino trafficker and nail him for dealing in rhino horns.

Lieutenant-General Mondli Zuma said he was formally asked by State Security Minister David Mahlobo to investigate Guan Jiang Guang.

“We can confirm that the provincial commissioner did receive a request to institute investigations on the allegations made,” spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said on Friday morning.

“He requested that the allegations made against him in the documentary be investigated as well as investigating for Guang for being involved in rhino poaching and possible human trafficking activities,” Mulaudzi said.

“But long before we received the request, Guan was under Hawks investigation,” he said.

In the documentary, Guan tells the Al Jazeera investigator that he bribes South African justice and immigration officials to get his way through to crime.

On Thursday, minister in the presidency, Jeff Radebe, called on everyone to wait for the cops to finish their investigations into Guan.

Mahlobo has since admitted to visiting Guan’s Mbombela spa for massage but said he “had no idea as to what Mr Guang was involved in”.

“The minister refutes these ludicrous allegations with all the contempt they deserve and reserves his right in respect of those making such false claims,” spokesman Brian Dube said on Sunday, a week ago.

Meanwhile Guan is believed to have gone into hiding as he has not been seen since the interview was aired last Sunday.
