This program benefits learners travelling between 2 and 5 kilometres to school.
Mpumalanga public works, roads and transport MEC Sasekani Manzini has donated 2000 bicycles to learners.
The learners live in and around KwaMhlanga.
Departmental spokesman David Nkambule says this is part of the government’s ‘Shova Kalula’ programme.
“The event was held at the former KwaMhlanga legislature on Thursday (22 Jun).
“Shova Kalula bicycle programme is a non-motorised transport mode aimed at benefiting learners who travel between 2-5 kilometres to school but do not qualify for Scholar Transport,” Nkambule said.

The programme is a supplement to Scholar Transport, Nkambule added.
About 6000 bicycles have been donated annually to deserving learners in the province since 2005.
Nkambule said: “These learners are identified in partnership with the department of education”.
“This programme also assists to enhance effective teaching and learning at schools by reducing travel time and remain the property of schools after learners have completed Matric,” he said.
On Tuesday (27 Jun) the MEC will continue with this programme, donating another 2000 bicycles to learners around Ermelo.
