A high court sitting in Barberton has sent a 24-year-old man to go spend 93 years of his life behind bars for raping 5 women.

Known as Marathon Livanje, the young man committed the crimes about 7 years ago – when he was merely a 17-year-old teenage boy.

He was arrested in 2016 and was positively linked to all the rapes.

Livanje, a very naughty and violent young man, faced 5 counts of rape, 2 of robbery, 3 of housebreaking and 2 of theft.

Police spokesman Brigadier Leonard Hlathi said Livanje got 50 years for raping the 5 women, 35 years for breaking into their homes and robbing them of their belongings and 8 years for theft.

In one of the incidents, cellphones and a firearm was taken by Livanje, said Hlathi.

“The court ordered that the robberies, housebreaking and the theft sentences, run concurrently with two of the rape sentences,” he said, adding the young man will now spend 30 years in prison as a result of this court order.

In another separate case, two killers were sentenced to 38 years by the Evander Magistrates Court after kidnapping, maiming, and killing a local farmer.

They are 34-year-old Kansas Mintoor and Andries Nkabinde, aged 47.

“The sentencing of the pair comes after the court heard how they shot a 55-year-old farmer while he was entering his house with his wife. They ambushed the couple while they were coming from the airport entering their house, holding them at gunpoint immediately after getting out of their car.

“A struggle ensued between the man and the attackers resulting in a shot going off, hitting the victim.

“The suspects went inside the house, ransacked it and robbed the victims of firearms, laptops as well as belongings before fleeing the scene in the victims’ bakkie, taking the victims along with them.  The bakkie was found abandoned near a local filling station shortly after the victims had been dumped along the road. The suspects were subsequently arrested and had been kept in custody ever since,” Hlathi said.

He added that another young man got a 15-year jail term for raping a 32-year-old woman. He was sentenced by the Mbombela Magistrates Court.

His name is 25-year-old Sibusiso Ndzukula who raped the 32-year-old in 2014.

He was arrested in 2016. The woman had been coming from hospital in the Mbombela area and Ndzukula “accosted and dragged her to a nearby bush, where he raped her,” Hlathi said.

“An investigation was launched which led to his arrest in 2016,” he said.
