He says he will keep it within himself the name of the right leader fit to succeed DD Mabuza.

Mpumalanga ANC treasurer Vusi Shongwe’s choices ahead of congress won’t be divulged to anybody as they are his secret, Shongwe has said.

He agreed to be interviewed by 013NEWS while attending two funerals in his hometown of Breyten, east of Ermelo, the past weekend.

He said between acting chairman Mandla Ndlovu and Premier Refilwe Tsipane “the view remains my secret”. Shongwe said his “support” for any candidate “will be determined by my branch here in Breyten”.

Shongwe is punted as a treasurer in Tsipane’s slate but when asked on Sunday midday 17 November 2019 about his availability to retain the post of treasurer on Tsipane’s slate he said he was too disciplined to choose which position he wants in the ANC.

“As a disciplined cadre of the ANC I can’t say I’m available,” he said.

“The processes of the ANC say that the branches are the ones that must nominate me and say to me, ‘Comrade Vusi we are nominating you for this particular position in this structure’, that is what I’m going to listen to.

“I’m not going to come out and say I’m available for a position. That is not the nature and the character of the ANC. All those comrades who are saying I’m available for a particular position are comrades who don’t understand the nature and the procedures of the ANC”.

He said ANC leaders are nominated and elected by members and they do not nominate themselves.

Shongwe attended two funerals in the Breyten township of KwaZanele, one on Saturday 16 November and another on Sunday.

The Saturday one was the funeral of his younger brother Bheki and the Sunday one was that of Busi Mhlanga, the ANC branch secretary in Shongwe’s ward, who died after falling ill. Bheki, who also died of an illness, led the SACP in Shongwe’s ward 14 as secretary.

“The ANC leaders are nominated by branches for the position they see them fit for and not the ones they want. No, the ANC doesn’t work like”.

He added her will support anybody chosen by his own branch of ward 14, “because that is the ANC home I belong to and I can’t go against it wherever I am”.
