Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane has promised her government would empower through funding the companies that are led by women in the province.
She said the R50 million set for the Youth Development Fund will actually prioritise women as well as other programmes in agriculture that will “prioritise funding to female owned commercial farming enterprises through the fortune 40 incubation programme”.
She released her Women’s Month message on Thursday 5 August 2020.
“During the lockdown period, women have continued to carry the burden of unpaid care work,” the Premier said.
“Women have been caring for children and families while at home, and have been responsible for maintaining the home without recognition and appreciation,” she said.
Tsipane also announced that her government will continue to make sure that women occupy key positions in her government.
She said currently women occupied 36.4% of senior managerial positions in her government.
“My commitment is to implement gender parity during the course of this administration and we have started this process to ensure that females occupy 50% of accounting officers’ roles within the provincial government.
“Indeed, there is a long journey ahead of us,” said the Premier.
She added her government will continue to work tirelessly to ensure Mpumalanga becomes a safer place for women and children.
“As women, we live with the daily knowledge that no space is safe for us because of this scourge,” she said.
“Not a day goes by without us discovering gruesome details of the brutality meted out against us and children by men,” said Tsipane.
Women were urged to report perpetrators of gender based violence to 0800 428 428.
