Premier Refilwe Mtshweni-Tsipane discovered what felt like a normal seasonal flu was actually the Covid-19 virus.
She tested positive Wednesday 30 September 2020.
Her office said she reported mild symptoms and will continue to execute her duties as Premier from home.
Spokeswoman Sibongile Mkani-Mpolweni said she developed the flu-like symptoms on Sunday 28 September and then on Wednesday “undertook the test in an effort to establish the cause for the symptoms”.

“The Premier has been in precautionary isolation since Sunday and will continue to monitor her health,” Mpolweni said.
“She will continue to execute her duties remotely,” she said.
Mpolweni said Tsipane has communicated the news to all people who she had contact with in the past 7 days, so that they too are aware and if they develop such symptoms they immediately get medical opinions.
Tsipane has urged the people of Mpumalanga to continue to take the necessary measures to minimise the risk of being infected with Covid-19, Mpolweni said.
“The Premier further urged the people of Mpumalanga to continue to use their masks, disinfect surfaces frequently and wash or sanitise hands extensively,” said Mpolweni.
The DA said in a statement on Wednesday said they wished Tsipane a speedy recovery.
“Politics aside, the DA honestly wishes Mtshweni-Tsipane a speedy recovery and hopes that she comes back soon to execute the duties that have been bestowed upon her by the masses of the province,” DA leader Jane Sithole said.
“Now that the Premier knows first hand how it feels to have Covid-19, we hope that she will realise and take serious the plight of the Front Line workers who are concerned about the shortage of Personnel Protective Equipment (PPE).
“In recent times, the DA has received a number of complaints from healthcare workers in hospitals and clinics who do not have enough Personnel Protective Equipment and are terrified to work without such equipment being supplied,” she said.
