Mpumalanga education MEC Bonakele Majuba has conveyed his condolences to the families of 8 kids who died when the taxi they were travelling in overturned, injuring scores and killing 8 pupils in the Mpuluzi area.

It happened just after 3 in the afternoon when the rural kids were being transported from the three schools, Tisiteni, Sitanani and Wesley primary schools.

Majuba said the loss is “shattering news” as the life lost was a “promising future” of the country as a whole.

“These are sad and shattering news,” Majuba said, adding they wish the bereaved families “all the strength they can muster in this time of need”.

“The loss of young lives who had a promising future,” he said in a statement released by spokesman Jasper Zwane Thursday 17 February 2022.

Zwane said the injured kids were taken to the eMbuleni Hospital in Nhlazatshe.

The DA’s member of the legislature, Trudie Grovè-Morgan, said they discovered that the taxi had actually carried 18 kids instead of the 15 allowed by the country’s law.

She said it was important that drivers and taxi drivers should at all-time avoid overloading.

The department will visit the families.
