The beleaguered municipality is currently the centre stage of political infighting in Mpumalanga.
Co-operative governance MEC Mandla Msibi is currently said to be planning a probe on the Mkhondo local municipality.
Sources say Msibi received complaints about corrupt activities at the municipality and is asked to begin a section 106 investigation.
Mkhondo is currently the centre stage of political infighting in Mpumalanga after the expulsion of strongman Vusi Motha from the ANC and the ruthless assassination of regional deputy leader Muzi Manyathi.

DA councillor Irene Brussow said she saw a letter last month by Msibi directed to Mkhondo mayor Mthokozisi Simelane.
It requested a meeting between Msibi’s office and the municipal executives, including acting municipal manager Bheki Maseko.
This is seen to be Msibi’s first acts in appointing a forensic investigation team that will look into reported allegations of corruption, nepotism, bad governance and fraud.
Msibi will probably look at a string of alleged misdeeds, including the ones recently mentioned by the Auditor-General about a R260-million in fruitless and unauthorized expenditure.
Brussow said a number of vacant posts, some as a result of the expelled ANC councilors this year, contributes immensely to poor service delivery.
These include the position of a municipal Manager, manager for technical service, manager for corporate and town planner.

“Residents deserve an honest and transparent government who will prioritise service delivery.
“The DA feels that COGTA intervention into the affairs of this municipality is long overdue. We call on the MEC to accelerate his intended investigation and act decisively in dealing with those implicated in any wrong doing,” said Brussow.
